Ever wondered what it’s really like to work with a designer? Spoiler alert: it’s not just about picking pretty colors & trendy furniture.
The Design Experience
It’s hard to explain it, but often when working with clients, I hear something along the lines of, “I’ve never worked with a designer before, so this is a new experience for me & I don’t know what to expect.”
People often have the notion that designers always know exactly what they will do 100% of the time & that complete projects will just magically appear. There's also a misconception that design is merely about having a specific “taste.” The reality is that design is best described as an adventure. Through the iterative process, ideas are explored, & new opportunities & the potential for greatness reveal themselves.
Every time I work with new clients, they end up getting a crash course in design & architecture. They learn how space & color are perceived, & how subtle changes can affect how a space feels.
You might not realize it, but every decision you make can have a significant impact on the quality of your space. Should I pick the black faucet or the silver one? Should the sink be round or square? What does it even matter?
By the end of the project, clients usually start asking me, “Is there a reason I should pick this over that? What should I consider in my decision?”
I love getting to the 60% phase of projects with clients because it's around that time that they start to understand some of the fundamentals & become active partners in the design process. This phase is where the magic happens, as clients see their ideas take shape & begin to appreciate the intricacies of good design.
In a recent project, I presented a design theme to the clients. The focus was to highlight the wood in the space, using dark cabinets to contrast the wood. The clients loved the initial concept but felt it was a little masculine. The art on the walls was also a bit too urban gallery for their taste. They wanted to explore lighter tones & maybe a pop of color. This changed the focus from the wood but maintained the natural essence of the outdoors. The lighter-toned space kept a lot of the original vibes but aligned better with the clients' preferences. Both schemes were strong, with a subtle change in the impact.
