I’m tired of seeing the same old exterior renderings of houses that all look like every other suburban home. Sure, you might have picked the colors and materials to make it “yours,” but let’s be honest—it still looks like every other house on the block. And frankly, looks aren’t the most important thing. While aesthetics can enhance the quality of spaces when layered over solid fundamentals, you need to start with a strong foundation. Your design basics need more attention, and you don’t even see it because you don’t know what to look for.
Here’s what really matters:
- Floor Plans: Show me a layout that makes sense. (And show your work, it’s more than personal preference, there is a psychology to good space design.)
- Kitchen Design: A good kitchen triangle makes all the difference. It’s okay to have a big kitchen, but the kitchen is a dangerous place with sharp, hot, and slippery things. How you locate your kitchen within the home is critical to how it functions in the home.
- Furniture Layouts: Effective arrangements that consider how people move through the space. Consider effective circulation paths through each space. Consider your focal points, consider competing focal points, and if you don’t know what that means, you should hire a professional.
- Storage Solutions: Smart and practical places to store your stuff. Things should be easy to pull out and put away. Simply having a cabinet that can hold things isn’t enough; if it’s not easy to use, it won’t get used.
- Views and Sunlight: Thoughtful consideration of the views and natural light. A three-story window on a south aspect is a magnifying glass and you are the ant. Consider solar gain when considering that majestic view. Also, an entire house made of glass isn’t necessarily nice; it’s a fishbowl. You’ve designed a fishbowl, good job. The ability to select a specific view and create a moment of importance is more impactful than being immersed in everything always.
It’s too easy to create 3D models that look like homes. What truly matters is the assessment of each aspect of the design and the thoughtful consideration that makes a space exceptional. It’s about asking, “Is this good? Can this be better?”
At JDESIGN Studio, we prioritize these elements to create spaces that are not only functional but truly exceptional. Let's shift the focus from superficial appearances to thoughtful, high-quality design.
